Mary Kennedy originally started her music career playing piano taking lessons from the nuns at Providence Manor in Kingston. She picked up the fiddle at the age of 20 as she wanted to play an instrument that was more social and easily
carried. She is a graduate of Queen’s University with a BA focusing on music, especially music theory. She has been teaching fiddle and mandolin for five years.
Mary is the fiddle and mandolin player for Irish Roots, a local band playing
Celtic, Country and Folk. She teaches Irish fiddle music as well as the Ottawa Valley style with a smattering of Metis, Blues and Quebecois. Her teaching style focuses on fiddle technique, especially bowing for fiddle tunes. She can teach
by ear but also encourages learning to read music. She believes learning music should be fun and she strives to make this the case for all her students.
