Sonya Jean Zaback hails from Belleville, Ontario.
Her current musical style reflects the long-standing influences of classic jazz crooners Rosemary Clooney, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Etta James and Sarah Vaughan, as well as the more experimental jazz stages of Joni Mitchell.
Coming from a background of almost no formal training, Sonya enjoyed finding ways to duplicate her favourite artist’s vocal sounds, subtleties of which you can often hear during her performances.
While on stage Sonya can appear at varying times irreverent, smiling, emotional, poised, intense, humorous, sensual, awkward and endearing, always making a point to engage her audience.
While the majority of her performances are solo, Sonya has recently been given opportunities to appear with more seasoned local groups such as Freddy Vette and the Flames, the Dan Shaer Big Band, and the Commodores Orchestra.
You can also catch her on the theatrical stage both in Belleville and Prince Edward County with the Belleville Theatre Guild, the Village Theatre, and other community-run groups.
