Kitz Willman produces alternative, experimental hip-hop music with an anti-colonial agenda. Ukrainian ancestry and an upbringing in Treaty 6 Saskatoon permeates throughout their lyrics, samples, and sonics. The same can be said for the jazz-infused hip-hop that came out of Los Angeles in the early 90s. Ride cymbals, rolling bass grooves, and palinody piano punctuate freely flown samples of every texture imaginable. Willman’s most recent release, sprinter speak in marathon, is a self-produced promenade sung in the shadow of a minor key. Poetry and folksong semantics deliver imagery intended for the brevity desired of 2019. Currently based in Kingston, Ontario, Willman is in a lane of their own.
